Dog wearing sunglasses

Summer is here! Well, sort of. And the temptation is to head to the beach or the park and spend the day sunbathing and playing with your dog. However, it’s important to remember that dogs feel the heat even more than we do, as they have fewer sweat glands and can only rely on panting to cool down. I mean, would you wear a fur coat to the beach?!

Fortunately, there is lots we can do for our four-legged friends to keep them nice and cool on hot days, and we’ve come up with our top tips to do just that.

Cool drinks all round

There is nothing worse than a warm drink on an even warmer day and this is the same for dogs. Make sure to replace your dogs’ water every hour with fresh, cold water, even if they haven’t finished the current bowl. And it goes without saying, but we’re going to say it anyway, make sure to take plenty of water on walks with you.

Dogs love frozen goodies too

It’s the time of the year when at least 30% of your freezer is filled with everyone’s favourite ice lollies but make sure you don’t forget the dog! Freezing healthy treats, such a carrots, make for a healthy and tasty snack that will also cool your pup down.

An even more exciting way to keep them cool is to introduce cooling dog toys such as the All For Paws Ice Ball which is filled with a cool gel that once frozen, maintains the ice longer than other frozen dog toys on the market. Or if your pooch is a fan of water, submerge a Chill Out Watermelon Soaker toy in water as a fun way to keep them hydrated without them even realising! (We all know that one stubborn dog who refuses to drink out of their bowl on a hot day.)

Shades for you, shade for them

There’s nothing better than chilling with your pooch in the back garden on a beautiful sunny day, but it’s important that they have access to a shaded area so that they can take themselves out of the direct sunlight at any time. If your garden is always sunny (lucky!) and there isn’t any natural shade, you can create your own with everyday garden items like gazebos and umbrellas.

Sun loungers and dog mats

Picture this, you’re relaxing on your super comfy new sun lounger with your favourite book in hand and your pooch laying beside you… The only problem is that a hot dog will do anything but sit still. Luckily, the All For Paws Chill Out Always Cool dog mat is a pleasant way to keep them nice and cool. Even on the hottest days, the special gel inside will remain cold, offering a refreshing place for you dog to rest all day long.
